A famous and historic country house is the setting for a new luxury 5-star Hotel and Spa, positioned in magnificent parklands and glens, where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea

THE VISION

Following a devastating fire in 2013 which destroyed the central section of the historic Mourne Park House, we had been searching for an economically viable, yet sympathetic way to breathe new life into what remained of this most special of places.

We needed a vision that was innovative, yet safeguarded the architectural heritage of the historic house and gardens.

After many unworkable models and much frustration, we were fortuitously introduced to Mullarkey Pedersen Architects, an award - winning partnership of Grade 1 Conservation Architects, with accolades such as the prestigious Bishop´s Gate Hotel development, amongst many others.

Together, we have developed a scheme of the highest quality that will see the demesne of Mourne Park House rejuvenated into a luxurious 5 star plus hotel and spa.

MOURNE PARK HOTEL & SPA

Having a ferry crossing at Carlingford Lough effectively means that Mourne Park is now within an hour’s travel from both Dublin and Belfast. Mourne Park is at the heart of the Kingdom of Mourne, an area identified in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Tourism Strategy as the next tourist hotspot in Ireland.

Mourne Park House is already situated in a recognised arboretum, and contains a large lake ideal for coarse fishing; a river stocked for game fishing; an 18-hole championship golf course within the estate walls; along with miles and miles of walks in the Glens and Mountains.  It is an obvious site for a high-quality hotel.  Mullarkey Pedersen has created a design for the hotel around the character of the existing buildings and courtyards and complemented these with considered interventions. These interventions take reference from the historic structures and built forms found within Mourne Park, such as the lake boat house.

In line with Planning Policy, the project sets out to achieve the provision of a sustainable and high-quality tourism development that facilitates sustainable tourism development in an environmentally sensitive manner - all of which will contribute to the growth of the regional economy by facilitating tourism growth and the consequential ripple effect on local businesses.

The hotel is a multi-million-pound development generating an estimated 480 jobs during the construction period and approximately 150-200 jobs upon completion within the hotel restaurants and function room and spa facilities.  The project will also create additional indirect jobs throughout the locality of Newry, Mourne and Down.
